Super Skate Posse Giveback 1: Watts Community Core

On September 18th, 2020 the Super Skate Posse was formed when skateboarding community came together to spread the gospel of stoke to the kids of the Nickerson Gardens housing project in Watts, California. 100 Baker & Santa Cruz Skateboards were given out along with 100 Vans Skate Shoes & Pro Tec helmets. None of this would have been possible without the inspiration from Watts Community Core and all they’re doing for the good folks of Nickerson. Each and every Friday since March WCC President, Tanya Dorsey, and dozens of Watts Community Core volunteers have been feeding over 700 families in Watts. Due to unemployment skyrocketing during Covid shutdowns, if it were not for The Watts Community Core many of these families would go hungry.

Nickerson Gardens, built in 1955, is the largest public housing development west of the Mississippi River. The skatepark in Nickerson was built in 2010. When asked if the kids ever used the park, Tanya responded that, “They run up and down on the ramps but they don’t own skateboards.” Just over one month later, after selling a photo zine to cover expenses and pulling together a crew of friends from that wanted to support we kicked off the first Super Skate Posse skateboard giveaway in Nickerson and introduced 100 kids to skateboarding for the first time.

We always say, “When you find skateboarding you find your people.” Skateboarding saves lives and everyone that does it is looking for an outlet to be happy, have fun, laugh with their friends and maybe find some peace of mind from whatever might be going on in their life. There is something truly magical about the simple act of rolling. We are beyond thankful to be part of the skateboarding community and for all the love and support of our Super Skater Posse efforts.

We again wanted to thank everyone in Nickerson for coming out and welcoming us into your park. Most of all we want to thank Tanya and the Watts Community Core for all the continuous hard work they put in every day. The love and energy that we’ve received from volunteering has been life changing. (For more info or to donate go to https://wattscommunitycore.org )
